THIEVES ransacked the room of a 13-year-old Dapto girl, stealing her pocket money and escaping with her prized Christmas gift a day after she unwrapped it.

On Christmas Day Jessica Najdovska was "beyond excited" when she received the gift she had been "begging for" - a hot pink iPod.

Her mum, Valentina, did not think she would be able to afford the expensive gift for her daughter, but "after I paid the bills and got the car fixed" there was just enough money left to buy the music player.

The excitement soon turned to bitter disappointment when on Boxing Day, Jessica returned home from an outing to find her room ransacked and her iPod gone, along with two money tins; one labelled "kids holiday fund".

"She was inconsolable," Ms Najdovska said. "She was crying in the bathroom.

"She begged me for an iPod and I couldn't afford it and I was finally able to get it two days before Christmas.

"I said to her 'Sweetie you are going to have to wait a bit longer' and she said 'I understand mum'."

Police are investigating the robbery but the family hold little hope of recovering the treasured gift.

"Nothing else was touched except my room and my daughter's," Ms Najdovska said.

Ms Najdovska, who works in a Wollongong cafe, said she could not afford to buy another iPod and was angry at the heartless thieves who stole the Christmas gift.

"One of my sisters got Jessica a card after the robbery and gave her $50 (towards a new iPod)," she said.

The "kids holiday fund" was filled with coins set aside for Ms Najdovska's three children to spend while on holiday.

"It was nearly full," Ms Najdovska said.

Police are investigating the robbery.
